Life and Beth
By Alan Ayckbourn
Whitchurch Little Theatre is back in rehearsals after the summer break with the comic and touching Alan Ayckbourn play ‘Life and Beth’.
It’s Christmas and Beth Timms is mourning the recent death of her health and safety officer husband Gordon.
Beth’s sister-in-law Connie and son Martin have come to stay, determined to ensure that she has a stress-free Christmas, but between Connie’s drinking and Martin’s non-speaking yet emotionally volatile girlfriend Ella, their intentions prove short-lived.
Only David, the local vicar, whose services Connie has been practically stalking, provides Beth with any comfort but when he says a prayer for her bereavement he unwittingly brings Gordon back as a ghost.
Gordon has been busy implementing health and safety measures in the afterlife and now wants to help Beth manage as she couldn’t possibly do that without him. But does she want him back? And to make matters worse Wagstaff the cat walked out on the day of the funeral and Connie, who had begun a liquid lunch with gusto, is arrested by the police after midnight mass for climbing a statue of the Duke of Wellington. Just another typical family Christmas with Ayckbourn.
It takes place at The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch Leisure Centre, Sir John Talbot’s School, from Tuesday October 22 to Friday October 25. First night tickets are £10 with the following performances at £12. All shows start at 7.30pm.
Tickets are available on www.wltg.org.uk, Crafty Birds in Bredwood Arcade, Whitchurch, or on 07506724572.
